Earlier this week, L'Oréal Paris announced the launch of the Lights On Women Award, which will honor one rising female filmmaker in partnership with the Short Films competition of the Festival de Cannes. The winner of the award will receive financial support of up to 30,000€, or nearly $37,000. The recipient of the prize will be announced at the Jeune Cinéma dinner in Cannes on July 16th by Kate Winslet, L'Oreal's newest ambassador. The winner will be chosen from short film programs from international film schools.
L'Oréal Paris has always been committed to women's empowerment, especially in the world of film where they have been an official partner of the Cannes Film Festival for more than 24 years. L'Oréal has furthered their commitment by launching Lights On Women Award, a dedicated award program for women in cinema. The Lights On Women Award will provide funding and encourage promising directors to pursue their creative ambitions which L'Oréal hopes will enable women in overcoming the obstacles that they encounter.
Thierry Frémaux, Director of the Festival international du film de Cannes says, "This exciting partnership with L'Oréal Paris represents a natural extension of the brand's ongoing support for Cannes and the wider cinema community." He adds, "The Lights On Women Award will offer a much-needed opportunity to honor a deserving creator and aligns with the broader commitment of the Short Films competition and international film schools' short film programs to recognize the female talent of tomorrow."
With The Lights On Women Award, L'Oréal hopes to correct gender imbalance within the film industry, give unique recognition designed to drive creativity and empowerment, and as Delphine Viguier-Hovasse, Global Brand President of L'Oréal Paris says, "have a long-term positive social impact for women in film."
